Visual search crossed 12B monthly queries on Google Lens in 2025, more than doubling from 2023. Pinterest carries another 2B monthly visual searches; Amazon Lens adds 800M for product discovery. Image SEO is no longer “remember to add alt text” — it is the discipline of making your pixels indexable, attributable, and link-worthy.

TL;DR

  • Lens reads pixels, not filenames. Google Lens uses a vision model that maps images to entities. Filename and alt text matter for traditional image search; image content quality, surrounding text, and structured data drive Lens results.
  • Pinterest is the second visual search engine. Pinterest indexes ~80% of properly tagged images from the open web within 7 days. Pinterest-specific schema (Pin rich pins) and vertical aspect ratios are non-negotiable.
  • Image attribution is the cleanest backlink hack still working in 2026. Using ImageObject with creator, creditText, and acquireLicensePage plus reverse-image monitoring earns dozens of contextual links per asset.

The mental model

Image SEO is like museum cataloging. The painting is the asset. The placard next to it (alt text, caption, surrounding paragraph) is what visitors read to understand it. The accession record (filename, EXIF, IPTC, schema) is what the museum’s database reads. The provenance chain (source, license, creator) is what makes the painting valuable enough to display elsewhere.

Search engines play all three roles. They read the placard to confirm what the painting is about. They read the accession record to verify identity and freshness. They read the provenance chain to decide whether to surface the painting in a feed, a Lens result, or as a citation. Skip any layer and you lose surface area — but the pixel itself is now scored too. A 600×400 stock image of a stethoscope no longer wins a query about cardiology when the competitor uploaded an original photograph of a real procedure.

Deep dive: the 2026 reality

Five forces define image SEO today.

Google Lens dominance. Lens lives in the Google app, Chrome (“Search with Google Lens”), Pixel cameras, and the search bar via the camera icon. It has been default in Search for screenshots since iOS 17.3. Lens results are scored by: (1) image-to-entity match confidence from the vision model, (2) page-level signals of the source (authority, freshness, schema), and (3) shopping signals when applicable (Product schema, price, availability).

Pinterest reach. Pinterest’s algorithm rewards vertical (2:3) images, descriptive overlay text, and specific Pin titles. Rich Pins automatically pull metadata from your page when Article, Recipe, or Product schema is present. A pin that goes viral can drive traffic for 18–36 months, far longer than any other social platform.

ImageObject schema as a citation magnet. Google’s image attribution framework (launched 2018, expanded 2023) reads creator, creditText, copyrightNotice, and acquireLicensePage from ImageObject JSON-LD and displays a “Licensable” badge. Images marked this way receive 2–4× more click-through to the source page in Google Images.

WebP and AVIF are baseline. AVIF beats WebP on compression by 20–30% and has full Chrome/Edge/Safari/Firefox support since 2024. Serving JPEG by default in 2026 is a Core Web Vitals own-goal.

AI image detection is real. Google’s IPTC DigitalSourceType field (e.g., compositeSynthetic, algorithmicMedia) is read and surfaced in Search. Synthetic images are not penalized, but they are tagged. Misrepresenting an AI-generated image as a real photograph is a quality-rater violation under the December 2024 search rater guidelines.

The bad approach

Filename reveals nothing. Alt text is either generic or stuffed for keywords (which Google’s quality system flags as manipulative since 2018). The image is hosted on a stock site, so the canonical signal points away from your domain. Lens has no entity match. Pinterest will not generate a Rich Pin. The image is invisible to attribution-link earning because there is no ImageObject declaring authorship.

The expert approach

The 2:3 aspect ratio is Pinterest-optimal. AVIF + WebP + JPEG fallback means modern browsers fetch the smallest payload. Alt text describes the image factually with named photographer (improves entity confidence and earns the Lens tiebreak). Caption is a real caption. ImageObject with creator, creditText, and acquireLicensePage triggers Google’s Licensable badge — the cleanest attribution-link earner in 2026.

Do this today

  1. Run Google Search Console → Performance → Search appearance → Image. Sort by clicks. Identify your top 10 image-driven pages and confirm each has ImageObject schema using the Rich Results Test.
  2. Convert your top traffic-driving images to AVIF plus a WebP fallback. Use Squoosh (squoosh.app) for one-offs or sharp (npm) in your build pipeline for scale. Check the file-size delta in PageSpeed Insights.
  3. Add explicit width and height attributes to every <img>. This eliminates Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) for image regions, the most common image-related Core Web Vitals penalty.
  4. Audit alt text on your top 100 images. Replace generic alt with factual, descriptive captions ≤ 125 characters. Run a quick check with Screaming FrogImages → Missing Alt Text and Alt Text > 125.
  5. Implement Pinterest Rich Pins. Validate at developers.pinterest.com/tools/url-debugger. Article, Product, and Recipe types each pull from existing schema you already have.
  6. Generate 2:3 vertical variants for the 20 highest-traffic images. Pinterest demotes 1:1 and 16:9 in favor of vertical. Save as [slug]-pin.jpg and add to your asset pipeline.
  7. Add acquireLicensePage and creditText to ImageObject for any original photography. This triggers the Licensable badge and creates a citation path for republishers.
  8. Set up reverse-image monitoring with Google Images (drag your image to images.google.com) or TinEye API for scaled checks. Email any site using your image without credit; conversion to an attribution link runs ~22%.
  9. Add IPTC DigitalSourceType to AI-generated images. Use compositeSynthetic for AI-edited photographs and algorithmicMedia for fully generated images. Honest tagging is a quality-rater positive in the 2024 guidelines.
  10. Test five core images in Google Lens (open google.com on mobile, tap the camera icon, upload). Verify your page appears in the Lens result panel. If it does not, the entity match is weak — improve surrounding text and structured data.
