Google AI Mode
The separate AI Mode interface. How it differs from AIO, the query fan-out architecture (decomposed sub-queries), citation patterns, and what optimizing specifically for AI Mode looks like.
Google AI Mode is not the AIO with a different chrome. It is a separate, dedicated conversational search surface — launched as a Labs experiment in March 2025 and made the default for signed-in US users in October 2025 — that performs query fan-out to retrieve from dozens of decomposed sub-queries, then synthesizes a long-form answer with deeper citation density. If AIO is a paragraph above the SERP, AI Mode is a research session that replaces it.
TL;DR
- AI Mode replaces the SERP entirely for the user who chose it. There is no “ten blue links” view by default; citations are inline footnotes inside a streamed multi-paragraph answer.
- Query fan-out is the architectural difference. A single user query is decomposed into 5–30 sub-queries, each retrieved separately, then synthesized. Pages cited inside AI Mode often rank for sub-queries you never see.
- Optimization shifts from “rank for the head term” to “be the best source for narrow, decomposable sub-questions.” Topical depth across an entity beats one perfect ranking page.
The mental model
AI Mode is like a research analyst who, when you ask “should I refinance my mortgage?”, doesn’t run one search. They run thirty: current 30-year rates, current 15-year rates, your existing rate, break-even calculation methodology, closing cost ranges in your state, prepayment penalty rules, tax deduction implications, refinance frequency norms, and so on. Then they compose a memo citing the best source for each branch.
Your page doesn’t have to win the head term. It has to be the best source for one of those branches. That changes the geometry of content strategy completely. Where AIO rewards a single comprehensive page, AI Mode rewards a constellation of pages that each own a narrow sub-topic with surgical precision.
The corollary: a thin page that ranks #18 for the head term but #1 for a specific sub-query (say, “average mortgage closing costs Massachusetts 2026”) will be cited by AI Mode while never being cited by AIO. AI Mode is friendlier to specialists than to generalists.

- Underlying model: Gemini 2.5 family (Pro for complex queries, Flash for simple ones), with Deep Search mode invoking Gemini 2.5 Pro Deep Research on multi-minute queries.
- Retrieval: Google’s full index plus the same Knowledge Graph, YouTube transcripts, and Reddit licensed corpus that AIO uses, but with query fan-out.
- Query fan-out decomposes the prompt into structured sub-queries. Internal documents leaked from a 2024 antitrust case (and Google’s I/O 2025 talks) confirm the decomposition uses an LLM-side classifier that emits typed sub-queries: factual lookup, comparison, definition, freshness check, geographic narrowing, temporal narrowing.
- Citation density: AI Mode answers cite an average of 9–14 distinct sources per answer, vs. 3–8 for AIOs (Profound and Authoritas tracking, Q4 2025).

Citation patterns in AI Mode (Profound’s January 2026 audit of 50K queries):
- Wikipedia is cited in ~31% of answers, vs. ~22% for AIO.
- Reddit is cited in ~18% of answers (highest among all Google surfaces).
- YouTube is cited in ~12% (transcript-driven).
- Domains in the top 100 organic but outside top 10 appear in ~28% of answers — much higher than AIO. This is the long-tail boost from query fan-out.
Practical implication. A site that ranks #15–30 for a head term but is the canonical source for several sub-questions can be cited heavily in AI Mode while being invisible in AIO. Pages need to be answer-shaped at the H2 and H3 level, not just at the lead.

This fails because each sub-topic is shallow. AI Mode’s retriever scores passages per sub-query, and a page that gives 100 words of generic prose on closing costs loses to a 1,500-word page laser-focused on closing costs by state with a comparison table.

Build a topical cluster — one short pillar plus deep, narrow children that each own one decomposed sub-query.

This wins because each page owns exactly one decomposable sub-query with specific numbers, named sources, and tabular structure. The fan-out retriever scores both pages high on their respective sub-queries. AI Mode synthesizes them together inside one answer, citing both — the user lands on whichever they click.
Do this today
- Open Google Search Console → Performance and segment by
Search Appearance = AI Mode(added to GSC in late 2025). Export the top 100 queries showing impressions inside AI Mode for your site. - Take 10 of your highest-volume informational queries and run each in AI Mode (google.com/ai), signed in. Capture the answer, the cited URLs, and crucially — the citation positions that you can infer to be sub-query slots. List the implied sub-queries beside each citation.
- For each implied sub-query without your URL cited, check if you have a dedicated page targeting it. If not, write a brief specifically focused on that sub-query — one page, one job.
- In Semrush → Topic Research or Ahrefs → Keywords Explorer → “Questions”, take a head term and pull the related questions. Map them to the decomposition pattern in step 2 — most overlap. These are your AI Mode optimization targets.
- Audit your internal linking: AI Mode favors retrieval from sites with strong topical hub structure. From your pillar page, every sub-query page should be one click away with descriptive anchor text. Tools: Screaming Frog → Internal links report or Sitebulb’s hub analysis.
- Add HowTo, FAQPage, and Dataset schema where appropriate. AI Mode’s retriever weights structured data more aggressively than legacy organic does because the synthesis step needs typed entities.
- Build per-sub-query comparison tables and original data points. Pages that contain numbers AI Mode can lift verbatim (“X is $4,243 in 2026”) get cited 2–3x more than prose-only pages — confirmed across both Profound and Surfer’s Q1 2026 audits.
- Set up Profound or Athena HQ tracking on AI Mode specifically (both broke out an AI Mode citation feed in late 2025). Track citation count weekly across your top 50 sub-query targets.
- Run a multi-turn audit: ask AI Mode the head query, then a follow-up. Citation patterns change in turn 2. Pages that get cited only in turn 1 are missing follow-up depth — add a “Common follow-up questions” section.
- In your content calendar, add a sub-query column. For every new piece of content, identify the exact decomposed sub-question it owns. If you can’t write that question in one sentence, the page is too broad for AI Mode optimization.
