Search Intent Deep Dive

Informational, commercial, transactional, navigational — plus micro-intents, fractured intent, branded vs non-branded, local vs global, and the 30-second intent test.

The single highest-leverage SEO skill is reading a query the way Google reads it. Get the intent right and the right page format follows. Get it wrong and you can write the best article on the internet for a query that wanted a calculator, a video, or a product — and rank nowhere. The classic four-bucket model is a starting point; the 2026 reality is fractured intent where one query genuinely wants three different things.

TL;DR

  • Intent is the feature gate. Google’s ranking systems pre-filter the index by intent class before scoring. A blog post will not rank for a query Google has classified as transactional, no matter how strong the page.
  • The 2026 model has more than four classes. Beyond informational/commercial/transactional/navigational, micro-intents like comparison, troubleshooting, definitional, statistical, and visual each map to specific SERP features.
  • The 30-second intent test is the fastest decision in SEO. Search the query in incognito, see what wins, mirror the format. If the SERP is split across formats, the query has fractured intent and you must pick a format and stick to it.

The mental model

Search intent is like the question form a librarian asks before walking you to a section. “What do you want to do?” If the answer is learn something, you go to non-fiction reference. If the answer is compare options, you go to consumer reports. If the answer is buy a specific book, the librarian walks you to checkout. If the answer is find a specific thing I already know exists, the librarian asks the title and goes straight to it.

Google does the same, but at query parse time. The query goes through RankBrain and successor systems, which output a probability distribution over intent classes. The retrieval and ranking stages then weight signals differently per intent. A page is not just relevant or irrelevant — it is intent-shaped or it is not.

The fractured-intent insight: some queries genuinely have multiple competing intents. python could mean the language, the snake, the comedy troupe, or Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Google now serves a mixed SERP for these — the top result is the dominant intent, but the next 3-5 results cover the runner-up intents. Your decision is whether to compete on the dominant or the niche.

Deep dive: the 2026 reality

The classic four intents and their SERP signatures:

Beyond these, micro-intents Google’s classifier distinguishes:

  • Definitional — wants a 1-3 sentence definition. what is hreflang returns a featured snippet over an article.
  • Comparison — wants A vs B. figma vs sketch always shows comparison-table pages.
  • Troubleshooting — wants a fix for a specific error. connection refused postgres shows step-by-step solutions.
  • Statistical — wants a number or chart. average rent san francisco shows current data, not articles about rent.
  • How-to / procedural — wants ordered steps. how to deploy nextjs to vercel returns step-by-step guides.
  • Visual — wants images or diagrams. mid-century modern living room is dominantly an image pack.
  • Local — wants a service in proximity. pizza near me, dentist san francisco triggers local pack.
  • Fresh / news — wants recent information. apple event 2026 triggers Top Stories.
  • Branded — query contains a brand name; intent shifts toward that brand’s properties.
  • Non-branded — generic; competition is open.

Fractured intent is the 2026 reality where Google serves a mixed SERP because the population of searchers wants different things. apple (the company vs. the fruit), python (language vs. snake), excel (Microsoft Excel vs. the verb). Google handles these by mixing the SERP — top half is dominant intent, bottom half hedges to runner-ups. Your decision is whether to compete on dominant or niche, never both.

The branded vs non-branded distinction matters because branded queries are 3-5x easier to rank for and 2-4x higher converting. A search for notion alternatives is non-branded commercial-investigation. A search for notion pricing is branded navigational. Different page, different intent, different conversion expectation.

The local vs global distinction is governed by Google’s location signals. Queries with explicit local modifiers (near me, in [city]) are obvious. Implicit-local queries (pizza, plumber, urgent care) are inferred by Google based on user location. If your business serves a service area, every keyword you target needs to be evaluated for whether Google treats it as local — most service queries are local even without the modifier.

Intent shifts over time. The query iphone 12 was transactional in 2020, commercial-investigation in 2022, and is now informational/legacy in 2026. Re-test intent every 12 months for your top queries. The single biggest reason traffic drops without warning is an intent shift Google detected before you did.

Bad vs. expert

The bad approach

Target keyword: "best CRM"
Page produced: 3,000-word blog post titled "Why Your Business Needs a CRM in 2026"
Result after 90 days: 4 keywords ranked, none for "best CRM" or its variants
Why: The SERP for "best CRM" is dominated by comparison listicles and product directories. A general "Why you need a CRM" article matches a different intent (informational definitional) for a different query ("what is a CRM").

This fails because the page format does not match the intent class of the target query. “Best CRM” is commercial-investigation; the SERP is 9 listicles and 1 product page. A 3,000-word “Why your business needs…” is informational and ranks for queries like do I need a crm, crm benefits, crm value. The author wrote the wrong page for the wrong query.

The expert approach

This works because the page format mirrors the dominant SERP format. Every section maps to a SERP feature it can win — the intro paragraph for AI Overview citation, the table for the featured snippet, H2s for PAAs, ItemList schema for the carousel. Original methodology gives Perplexity and ChatGPT something to cite.

Do this today

  1. Pick your top 10 target keywords from Google Search Console > Performance > Queries (sort by impressions).
  2. For each, open the query in Google.com incognito. Run a 30-second intent test:
    • What format dominates the top 5? (listicle, video, product, calculator, definition)
    • Is there an AI Overview? Read its citation list.
    • Are there PAAs? Note the four questions.
    • Are there shopping or local features? That signals intent class.
  3. Classify each keyword by primary intent (informational, commercial, transactional, navigational) and micro-intent (definitional, comparison, etc.). Add columns to your seo-mastery-log sheet.
  4. Compare each target keyword’s intent class to the page you currently rank with. Mismatches are why you are stuck on page 2-3 — note them as “intent mismatch” priority fixes.
  5. For commercial-investigation queries, open Ahrefs > Keywords Explorer > SERP overview > “Identify Intent” column. Verify Ahrefs’ classification matches your manual assessment.
  6. For any keyword with fractured intent (top 5 results show 2+ formats), pick the format that matches your business model. Do not try to hedge; Google’s classifier will rank you for nothing if you blur the page.
  7. Re-test intent on your top 10 ranking pages every 12 months. Set a calendar reminder titled “Annual intent re-test.” Intent drift is the silent killer of established rankings.
